AICHR Regional Workshop on Millennium Development Goals Post 2015 and Human Rights
The ASEAN Intergovernmental Commission on Human Rights (AICHR) organized a two day Regional Workshop on Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) Post 2015 and Human Rights in Jakarta, Indonesia, from 11-12 December 2013. The Regional Workshop was held by AICHR Indonesia with support from the Directorate General of ASEAN Cooperation, Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Indonesia and the Regional EU-ASEAN Dialogue Instrument (READI) Facility.
Lao PDR Prepares an Initial Report under ICCPR
On 12 December 2013, at the International Convention and Training Center (ICTC) in Vientiane, the Lao Ministry of Foreign Affairs in collaboration with the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights Regional Office organized a Workshop on Reporting under the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights. The Lao PDR ratified the ICCPR in 2009 and is in the preparatory process for the country’s Initial Report. Attending the Workshop were officials from line ministries and institutions appointed as coordinating persons under the National Steering Committee on Human Rights established since 2012.

The Philippines, through the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) and the Department of Justice – Inter-agency Council Against Trafficking (IACAT), hosted an ASEAN Intergovernmental Commission on Human Rights (AICHR) Regional Workshop on the Human Rights-Based Approach to Combat Trafficking in Persons, Especially Women and Children, in Makati from 27 to 28 November 2013.

A consultation on ‘the AICHR’s thematic study on Migration’ was organised by H.E. Dr. Seree Nonthasoot, Thailand representative to the AICHR, on 17 October 2013, at Institute of Research and Development for Public Enterprises in Bangkok, Thailand. In conjunction with the Celebration of the 46th ASEAN Day at the ASEAN Secretariat in Jakarta, Indonesia, the ASEAN Intergovernmental Commission on Human Rights (AICHR), in partnership with the Committee of Permanent Representatives (CPR), held a joint event themed “Contributing to the ASEAN Community Building through the Implementation of the ASEAN Human Rights Declaration (AHRD)”. The event saw the launch of the “ASEAN Human Rights Declaration (AHRD) and the Phnom Penh Statement on the Adoption of the AHRD, and its Translations” book. The book compiles the translations of the AHRD and the Phnom Penh Statement into the national languages of the ASEAN Member States. The book launch was followed by a panel discussion on the AHRD and the ASEAN community building by 2015.

The ASEAN Intergovernmental Commission on Human Rights (AICHR) launched the first ASEAN Youth Debate on Human Rights on April 04 to 05 held at the Ateneo Professional Schools in Rockwell, Makati City, Philippines. The event was organised by the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) of the Philippines in collaboration with the Ateneo Human Rights Center (AHRC) and the Ateneo Society of International Law (ASIL).
University students from the ten ASEAN Member States participated in the two-day event bearing the theme, “Mainstreaming Human Rights in ASEAN Community-Building.” The event aimed to raise greater awareness and appreciation of human rights, as well as to promote camaraderie among the students and youth of ASEAN.
