JOINT PRESS RELEASE – The AICHR and ACWC Consultation Meeting

In an effort to foster greater engagement and functional cooperation, the ASEAN Intergovernmental Commission on Human Rights (AICHR) held a consultation meeting with the ASEAN Commission on the Promotion and Protection of the Rights of Women and Children (ACWC) on 25 April 2014 at the ASEAN Secretariat. This was the second meeting between the two human rights mechanisms in ASEAN after their first meeting in November 2011, in Bali, Indonesia. The consultation meeting was co-chaired by H.E. U Kyaw Tint Swe, the Chair of the AICHR and H.E.Datin Paduka Intan Md. Kassim, the Chair of the ACWC.

AICHR Regional Workshop on Millennium Development Goals Post 2015 and Human Rights


The ASEAN Intergovernmental Commission on Human Rights (AICHR) organized a two day Regional Workshop on Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) Post 2015 and Human Rights in Jakarta, Indonesia, from 11-12 December 2013. The Regional Workshop was held by AICHR Indonesia with support from the Directorate General of ASEAN Cooperation, Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Indonesia and the Regional EU-ASEAN Dialogue Instrument (READI) Facility.

Lao PDR Prepares an Initial Report under ICCPR

On 12 December 2013, at the International Convention and Training Center (ICTC) in Vientiane, the Lao Ministry of Foreign Affairs in collaboration with the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights Regional Office organized a Workshop on Reporting under the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights. The Lao PDR ratified the ICCPR in 2009 and is in the preparatory process for the country’s Initial Report. Attending the Workshop were officials from line ministries and institutions appointed as coordinating persons under the National Steering Committee on Human Rights established since 2012.

The Philippines, through the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) and the Department of Justice – Inter-agency Council Against Trafficking (IACAT), hosted an ASEAN Intergovernmental Commission on Human Rights (AICHR) Regional Workshop on the Human Rights-Based Approach to Combat Trafficking in Persons, Especially Women and Children, in Makati from 27 to 28 November 2013.

AICHR Advanced Programme on Human Rights: Training of the Trainers

The ASEAN Intergovernmental Commission on Human Rights (AICHR) organised a five-day Advanced Programme on Human Rights: Training of the Trainers from 16 – 20 November 2013, at the Sukosol Hotel, Bangkok, Thailand. Dr. Seree Nonthasoot, Thailand representative to the AICHR, on 17 October 2013, at Institute of Research and Development for Public Enterprises in Bangkok, Thailand. Participants of this consultation included experts in the field of migration, who are from relevant government agencies (Ministry of Labor, Office of the National Security Council and Immigration Bureau), academic institutes and Civil Society Organizations (CSOs).
