Press Release: ASEAN Youth Debates on Human Rights

(4-5 April 2013, Ateneo Professional Schools in Rockwell, Makati City, Philippines)

The ASEAN Intergovernmental Commission on Human Rights (AICHR) launched the first ASEAN Youth Debate on Human Rights on April 04 to 05 held at the Ateneo Professional Schools in Rockwell, Makati City, Philippines. The event was organised by the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) of the Philippines in collaboration with the Ateneo Human Rights Center (AHRC) and the Ateneo Society of International Law (ASIL).

University students from the ten ASEAN Member States participated in the two-day event bearing the theme, “Mainstreaming Human Rights in ASEAN Community-Building.” The event aimed to raise greater awareness and appreciation of human rights, as well as to promote camaraderie among the students and youth of ASEAN.

A consultation between H.E. Dr. Seree Nonthasoot, Thailand representative to the AICHR, and representatives from CSOs on ‘the ASEAN Convention on the Elimination of Violence against Women’

The consultation was held on 14 March 2013 at the Institute of Research and Development for Public Enterprises, in Bangkok, Thailand. Presided by H.E. Dr. Seree Nonthasoot, Thailand representative to the AICHR, the consultation was joined by representatives from CSOs in the field of women’s rights. The purpose of the consultation was to inform the AICHR’s direction on drafting the ASEAN Convention on the Elimination of Violence against Women and also to encourage the CSOs to provide their inputs to the Convention to the AICHR.

The ASEAN Intergovernmental Commission on Human Rights (AICHR) concluded its Special Meeting on 8 – 10 March 2013 at the ASEAN Secretariat, Jakarta, Indonesia. The Special Meeting was chaired by H.E. Pehin Dato Dr. Awang Hj. Ahmad bin Hj. Jumat, the Representative of Brunei Darussalam and the Chair of AICHR. The Meeting focused on the work programme and the organisational support to the work of AICHR. The Meeting also discussed cooperation with the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) with the relevant ASEAN Sectoral Bodies. The AICHR Representatives met with the European Union (EU) to discuss avenues of cooperation.

The ASEAN Intergovernmental Commission on Human Rights (AICHR) organised a one week Regional Advance Training Programme on Human Rights: Training of the Trainers from 13 – 18 December 2012, in Sukosol Hotel, Bangkok, Thailand. The training programme is jointly organised by AICHR, Institute of Human Rights and Peace (IHRP), Mahidol University, Thailand and UN Women (with the partial support of CIDA). Participants included government, academe and CSO representatives from ASEAN Members States – Cambodia, Indonesia, Lao PDR, Myanmar, Philippines, Thailand, and Vietnam.

The ASEAN Intergovernmental Commission on Human Rights held a Regional Training Program on Promoting Access to Justice and Human Rights at Sukosol Hotel, Bangkok from 3 – 6 December 2012. The training program is jointly organised by AICHR, Institute of Human Rights and Peace (IHRP), Mahidol University, Thailand and UN Women with partial support from the CIDA. Participants included government, academe and CSO representatives working directly on access to justice issues from ASEAN Members States – Cambodia, Indonesia, Lao PDR, Thailand, and Vietnam.
