Special Meeting of the ASEAN Intergovernmental Commission on Human Rights (AICHR)

The ASEAN Intergovernmental Commission on Human Rights (AICHR) convened a Special Meeting on 14 – 16 November 2014 in Bangkok, Thailand. It is the last Meeting of the year for the AICHR under the Chairmanship of H.E. U Kyaw Tint Swe, Representative of Myanmar to the AICHR.


During the course of three days, the AICHR discussed and provided inputs to several concept papers for activities to be conducted under its priority programmes for 2015. The AICHR was also reported on the outcomes of the “Workshop on Human Rights, Environment and Climate Change” and on the “Follow-up Workshop on Post-Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) 2015”. The AICHR deliberated on their activities in contribution to the development of the ASEAN Community celebrations and discussed extensively the “Draft Guidelines on the AICHR’s Relations with Civil Society Organisations (CSOs)”.

The AICHR met with UN Women to discuss the “ASEAN-UN Women Framework Agreement for Cooperation”, as well as USAID Asia to discuss the ASEAN-U.S. PROGRESS proposal to support the work of the AICHR.

The Meeting concluded with the handover of the AICHR’s chairmanship from the Representative of Myanmar to the Representative of Malaysia, H.E. Tan Sri Dato’ Sri Dr Muhammad Shafee Abdullah. The AICHR Representatives expressed their high appreciation to the Representative of Myanmar for his hard work and excellent leadership over the past year.

The Meeting also thanked the Representative of Thailand and the Government of the Kingdom of Thailand as the host, for the hospitality and excellent arrangements extended to all the delegations. The 17th Meeting of the AICHR will be convened in February 2015 in Malaysia.
