ASEAN Workshop Advances Disability-Inclusive Responses to Trafficking in Persons

Laguna, 8 May 2026 – Regional stakeholders gathered in the Philippines on 7–8 May 2026 for a workshop aimed at advancing more inclusive and rights-based approaches to combat trafficking in persons, with particular attention to persons with disabilities.

Organised by the ASEAN Intergovernmental Commission on Human Rights (AICHR), led by Asst. Prof. Dr. Bhanubhatra Jittiang, Representative of Thailand to AICHR, with support from the Australian Government through ASEAN–Australia Counter Trafficking (ASEAN-ACT), the workshop focused on validating the zero draft of the ASEAN Policy Brief on Disability and Trafficking in Persons. The meeting brought together 50 representatives from ASEAN sectoral bodies, government institutions, civil society, and organisations of persons with disabilities (OPDs).

Building on the initiatives and efforts of the ASEAN Commission on the Promotion and Protection of the Rights of Women and Children (ACWC), the workshop sought to present and validate the zero draft of the ASEAN Policy Brief through consultations with ASEAN stakeholders, government agencies, civil society, survivor leaders, and organisations of persons with disabilities. It also aimed to gather technical inputs, strengthen regional ownership among ASEAN Member States, and enhance the relevance, coherence, and practical application of the proposed policy recommendations.

The workshop also provided a platform for participants to review and refine key elements of the draft policy brief through interactive sessions and group discussions. Contributions from stakeholders, including those with lived experience, helped ensure the draft reflects practical realities and diverse perspectives.

The resulting Policy Brief is expected to offer actionable guidance for ASEAN Member States in enhancing national and regional responses to trafficking, reinforcing efforts to protect those most at risk and promote more inclusive and effective policy development across the region.
